re: Lightning Weekly News

Greetings everyone,

Last week we had a terrific meet, thanks for all your help.

Remember tomorrow night after the stroke clinic we will be having ice cream (hope it doesn't thunder this week).

Wednesday the meet is HOME against Ferry Farm. Swimmers need to arrive at the pool at 4:30pm. People who are signed up for set up should arrive at 4:00pm. Even if you aren't signed up for set up, but arrive early - PLEASE HELP!

A few VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS:
1. Children should NOT just be dropped off for practice and meets. If you are unable to stay (or there are schedule conflicts) make arrangements for another parent to watch your child.
             a. During practice the coaches are focused on the kids in the water, so before/after practice when the kids are on the deck parents need to watch them.
             b. At swim meets we may not even know a child is there alone  - this can be a very severe problem if a storm arises and the pool deck is cleared  - we make sure the deck is clear, but we don't watch where every child goes, and if they are with an adult.

If you let us know you need help, we'll help. But for the safety of your children, please don't assume they'll be okay - make sure they will be.

2. During practice and meets children should NOT be in the baby pool or on the steps in the water. The only swimmers should be in the lanes under the supervision of the coaches.

3. The kids on the deck before/after their practice are the responsibilty of their parents or any parent on the deck. If you see children misbehaving on the deck, or in the water (when they shouldn't be), please correct them. This is for the safety of everyone.

4. Practice is practice! If your child is not going to practice they should not attend. If they are goofing off, they are distracting the coaches from helping those that want to improve their stroke.

5. There will be practice on Friday and Monday for anyone in town. Also, Monday evening clinic.

6. NEW in Spirit wear!! Visors - they are blue with "Lee's Hill Lightning" and are selling for $10.00. We do have some other Spirit items, so check them out at the meet.

7. It's time to put in your ad for the Finals Heat Sheet. I've attached the form with all the information on prices and sizes. For new families think sports program, this lists who is swimming what for the whole meet. Our team gets a percentage from the ad sales.
             a. If you would like to place a personal or business ad use the attached form and get it to Michael O'Donoghue. They like to have them by July 6th, the very last day to get them to Michael is July 14th.
             b. The team will be placing an full page ad with swimmer and family signatures. It is $1.00 per signature. It will be available this Wednesday at practice and the meet.

Important upcoming dates:

July 7th - last day to get the team suit
July 17th - Car wash at Foster's Grill from 10 - 3, we will have a sign up sheet closer to the day. Also, if you eat at Foster's that night we will get a percentage (we will get you the flyer for this as well)

Wow this email is long, but hopefully filled with useful information. See the links below for the Missed meet online form, blog and our website.

re: Lightning Weekly news

Greetings everyone,

Thanks for all the help yesterday at the Mock meet. We did have some glitches, but we'll have those worked out for the meet on Wednesday. Hopefully it gave new swimmers and parents a sense of how a meet goes.

This Tuesday (6/22) during the evening stroke clinic we will have a question and answer meeting with Coach Jay. This is for all parents, but especially those that couldn't make the other parent meeting. If you attended the parent meeting but had a question after a week of practice and the Mock meet, please attend.

Also, on Tuesday after the evening clinic we will have ice cream for the swimmers!

Wednesday (6/23) is our first meet!! This is s HOME meet. Swimmers should arrive at 4:30pm. Parents on set up should arrive at 4:00pm. Regardless of what the weather is like, we show up for the meet. If the weather is severe in advance of the meet, check the Blog for any update. Assume the meet is on as scheduled unless it is posted otherwise. It takes thunder and lightning to stop a meet. If the meet is postponed (either before or during), the make up date is Thursday (6/24).

If your swimmers will miss a meet, please fill out a "Missed Meet form" for Coach Jay. This form is on the website as a pdf and online form. It is also available in the file box at the pool.

re: Mock meet and other swim team things

Greetings,

A few things to let you know:

1. Reminder - SPIRIT NIGHT!! Is tomorrow at Subway and Rita's on Courthouse Road, just mention Lee's Hill and the team gets a percentage. (4pm - 9pm). Great excuse for dinner out.

2. MOCK MEET - swimmers need to be at the North pool by 6:30 for warm ups. Parent's helping to set up should get there a little earlier. We are finished the meet by 10am (when the pool opens). This is a meet with just us. There are several purposes for this:
                a. Coach Jay gets times on swimmers
                b. Swimmers (especially new ones, get the feel of a starting off the blocks, the starting system, the big picture on how a meet goes)
                c. Parents get to practice their jobs, we get practice/refresher on setting up for a meet.

3. SWIM SUITS- will be available tomorrow at practice and at the Mock Meet on Saturday. When you decide on the appropriate size for your swimmer, write a check and walk away with the suit. No ordering, no waiting.

4. CONCESSION CARDS - will be on sale at the Mock Meet and at practices next week. $20/card, these cards allow you to purchase items from the concession stand at HOME meets, without having to carry cash.

5. If you are going to miss a meet, please fill out a form to let Coach Jay know. Forms are available in 3 formats:
               a. Paper  - in the file box available at practices (each family has a folder in the box, so check it periodically)
               b. Download the PDF from the website - www.golightning.org; "Registration"; on the right side "Forms"
               c. Online from the website, follow same directions as above but you fill out the form and submit to Jay

If you have questions - ask. If you have ideas - share!

re: Lightning Spirit Night

Just a reminder about the Lightning Spirit Night at Subway and Rita's this Friday evening. Spread the word - dinner and dessert with friends and a percentage goes to the swim team! Just mention Lee's Hill. If you don't know both Subway and Rita's are located on Leavells Road across from Battlefield Middle School. Wear a Lightning t-shirt, show your team Spirit!

FW: swim team

See the email below from Carey regarding volunteering.

For the many new families - the Mock Meet is at the North pool and it's just our team. It gives new swimmers a "meet experience", Coach Jay times for swimmers that helps her plan the meet and parents practice/refresher at their jobs.

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for filling up the jobs for our meets.  It is great to see so many new names and I can't wait to meet all of you at the pool.

We also need our mock meet positions filled.  The mock meet is a great opportunity to get a refresher on a job or to try out your new one before a dual meet.  Because it isn't a full meet, we don't need many slots filled, but we do need your help.

I am going to be gone at a teacher institute for the first two meets, so Stacy Cochrane has graciously volunteered to take my place for the first two meets.  After the 18th, if you have any questions, please feel free to find her.  She did the Meet Director job quite successfully before I did and will be glad to help any new parents or old figure out what they are doing.  We will be sending out reminder emails for the meets as soon as I figure out to do that with the new sign-ups.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions,

Carey Pohanka
Meet Director

Swim Suits

Boy's suits are finally available! I will be at practice Monday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. The boy's suits are $37 and I will have a size conversion chart available if you need it. Girl's size 22-28 should be arriving shortly - hopefully this week!

We are also selling the newly designed towel, goggles, lanyards and coming soon are Lee's Hill Lightning visors.

re: swim team

Greetings everyone,

First and most important - THANK YOU to the men who showed up this morning to put the posts in for our record board. The Board will be put up as soon as the concrete cures. And it looks fabulous!!

Second, we'd like to welcome Mike Young as a Student Coach.

Third, morning practices start on Monday!
8 and under age groups: 9:20 to 9:55 am
9-12 ages group 8:30 to 9:20 am
13 and up age groups: 7:30 to 8:30 am**
Adults** 6:30 to 7:15 am Tues & Fri

** this an opportunity for parents to swim some laps and get some tips and help from Coach Jay. So join us and an early morning swim in before work.

We know that some kids are not out of school yet, so we know they won't be at practice until next week. We look forward to it.

Fourth, the Mock Meet is next Saturday morning @  7:00am. Even if your swimmer has not attend practice have them swim in the Mock Meet, just let Jay know they'll be there.

Fifth, be sure to fill out the "Meet Absent Form" for your swimmers if they will not be attending a meet. This allows Jay to plan the meet accurately.

And finally (for now), as we start the season remember four things:
 1. It's about the kids, and they should have fun
 2. The kids need your help to run the meet - see Carey to sign up for jobs or check the Blog for online links.
 3. Introduce yourself to the other parents, you should have fun too.
 4. It's about the kids, and they should have fun (yes it begins and ends with the kids!)

Go Lightning!!

Subject: Please send to the whole team

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for making sign up so seamless for me.  I really appreciate it.

We are still looking for some people to be officials (stroke and turn, referee, starter, head timer).  If you are willing to step up and help with those, I would really appreciate it.  No previous experience is required for these.  There is one training left on Saturday at 9 am at Fox Point for anyone willing.  If you would like to be an official, but cannot make the training, let me know and I can make other arrangements to get you trained.

I have rearranged some things to open up a few more jobs.  If you have not signed up for your 6 half meets yet, please go to our blog for the links to the meets to sign up.  I have removed the password so you will not need it to access any of the meets now.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

Carey Pohanka

re: swim team

Greetings everyone,

We have 138 children registered for swim team representing 70 families! Welcome to all the new families.

With this number of children you can imagine the mess we could create at the pool. Please make sure your family throws trash away, collects all their belongings and generally leaves the pool area clean each day. There are plenty of trash cans available, as well as a recycling container. Doing this keeps the relationship between the Swim team and the rest of the community (and lifeguards) positive.

Remember morning practices start Monday, June 14th. Parents, as we start morning practices it is easier to identify new familes. If you see a new face, introduce yourself!

re: Parent meeting

Greetings everyone,

Jay will be holding a parent meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday at the pool. This is especially for new parents, but everyone is welcome. If you were new last year or ten years ago and have words of wisdom to share please come - someone needs to hear them.

If you are getting this email and no longer have a swimmer and would like to be removed - just send me an email.

If you know someone that is new, make sure they are getting this email - if they aren't forward it to them and then they can send me an email to add them.

re: swim team practice

Greetings,

Okay so we got one practice in this week! There is NO PRACTICE FRIDAY. The next practice is Monday evening.

Lightning News Flash Blog - this is the easiest and quickest way to get word out regarding cancellations. (all the Board does not have everyone's email) You do not have to sign up or create a user account to see the postings. Go to the team website - www.golightning.org and click on the "Blog". We will also try to post it on facebook, but not everyone has access to our facebook page - Lee's Hill Lightning Swim Team group.

Congratulation to our graduates! I won't list them because I'm not certain I know all their names - I will by the end of the summer when we send them off to College!

If you know someone new to the team, make sure they get this email. If they didn't, they can send me an email and I'll add them to the group.

re: Swim Team record board

Greetings everyone,

We are planning a work party to install the Lightning Record Board on June 12th @ 8:00am and we need your help. This job requires installing two posts (we have a post hole digger) and attaching hooks to the post. We are trying to get this done before our first meet. With the enough help it won't take long.
