2019 RSL Officials Training Schedule and NEW On Line Training

Lee’s Hill Lightning Families,

A 2019 RSL Training Session is being held tonight -  Monday May 20th at the Spotsylvania YMCA pool from 7:00 – 9:00 PM for Referees, Stroke & Turn Officials, and Computer Operators.

Our team had a fantastic group of trained officials last year, but we were very short in some positions.  Some of our trained officials from last year are not returning to the team this summer. We really need additional Referees, Stroke and Turn Judges and Head Timers!! Hopefully, most of last year’s returning officials will renew, if required this year, but it would be great if we could have many more people trained to help support our team. If you are feeling a bit unsure, I am 100% sure that the officials from last year would love to mentor you!  New officials will have the support of seasoned officials.   The more RSL trained officials the team has helps to spread out the workload over the season.

Remember, only Head Clerks of Course, Head Timers, Head Scorekeepers, and Starters who received training in 2018 will carry over to the 2019 season.

This year the RSL has created On-Line Training!

2019 Training Protocol

  • As required by 10.1 in the Rappahannock Swim League Rules, any volunteer who serves as:
    • Starter;
    • Scorer;
    • Head Timer; or
    • Clerk of Course

must participate in approved training once every two years.  For the 2019 summer swim season, the Rappahannock swim league is offering online training and certification for these positions.

If a volunteer attended training in 2018 for the above-listed positions, they do not need to train again.  If a volunteer attended training in 2017, they will need to take the online course and certification test.

The 2019 online training courses and certification exams are now available.  Please Crtl+Click  the link to view online training and assessments for each position - http://www.rslswimming.com/training-2/

First-year Starters must shadow a Starter with at least two years of experience and practice both forward and backward starts prior to working a meet in this position.  If your team does not have an experienced Starter able to mentor a new Starter, please contact the RSL.

Computer Operators are still required to attend an in-person RSL Clinic.  This Clinic will only cover instructions on using Meet Manager, computer seeding, etc.  It does not cover the other functions of the scoring table.  For this training, computer operators should bring their team laptop.

Here are the remaining four 2019 RSL Training Dates for:

Referee, Stroke and Turn Judge, and Computer Operation RSL approved training will be offered on these dates:

Monday, 20 May, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM @ Spotsylvania YMCA

Wednesday 05 June, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM @ Hopyard

Saturday 08 June, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM @ Hampton Oaks

Wednesday 12 June, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM @ Idlewild

Rule 10.2 regulating Referees and Stroke & Turn Judges has not changed.  Please refer to that rule for more specifics. Please RSVP to attend to one of the in person training sessions by filling out this form: 2019 RSL Training Sessions   (Control-Click on the Link)

NO MAKE UP SESSIONS WILL BE HELD

Volunteers are critical to the running of our swim meets. Competitive swimming requires parents to be actively involved in all aspects of our swim meets. Timers, judges, concessions attendants, announcers, starters, and scorekeepers are a few of the positions which are filled by parent volunteers. Volunteering is a requirement for our team.

If you have been trained in the past and need to renew, or have never been trained, please try to attend one of the RSL training sessions. If you are new to the team – there are plenty of volunteer positions that do not require training.  If you have been on the team for a few years – please think about getting training as a Stroke and Turn Judge.

If you are an active high school or USA Swimming Official, please be sure to fill out and return the required form to the RSL.

We really need Stroke and Turn Officials and Referees!

It is VERY helpful to have an Administrative Referee on Deck to help the meet move along faster.

But anyone wanting to train as a Starter, Head Timer, Head Clerk of Course,  or Head Scorer  - we always have a need!!!

PLEASE NOTE: All RSL training is free, except Stroke and Turn Trainees and Referees are required to complete the online course at StrokeAndTurn.com and to bring their certificate to training. The swim team will reimburse you for this expense if requested.

Please direct all questions regarding volunteer training to:   LeeHillSwims@gmail.com

Thank you very much for taking the time to get trained and for volunteering!

Go Lightning!

2019 RSL Training Schedule and Online Course Information

Lee’s Hill Lightning Families,

The first 2019 RSL Training Session is this Saturday May 18th at the Fawn Lake pool from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

It is that time of year again, when I need to request your help! The RSL has released all the dates for this year’s training classes.  Our team had a fantastic group of trained officials last year, but we were very short in some positions.  Some of our trained officials from last year are not returning to the team this summer. We really need additional Stroke and Turn Judges!! Hopefully, most of last year’s returning officials will renew, if required this year, but it would be great if we could have many more people trained to help support our team. For the 2019 summer swim season, the Rappahannock swim league is offering online training and certification for Starter, Scorer, Head Timer, & Clerk of Course.

If a volunteer attended training in 2018 for the above-listed positions, they do not need to train again.  If a volunteer attended training in 2017, they will need to take the online course and certification test.

The training courses and certification exams will be available after May 18, 2019.

The RSL has passed the following information:

In Person Training

RSL created a training RSVP form for those who are training in person.  Please forward this to your teams and ask parents to complete the form preferably no later than the night before the training session they plan to attend.  It will help us to know how many people to expect and help on the turnaround of trained personnel.  The form can be found here: RSL RSVP

As a reminder, the only people who need to train in person this year are the Referees, Stroke and Turn judges and computer operators.  Please remind computer operators to bring along their team computers.

Online Training

The online training and tests are being finalized and will be available on Saturday under the training tab.  There will be a link sent to individual teams with a spreadsheet of trained parents.  The spreadsheet will be periodically updated to reflect in person and online training.  Additionally, online tests should generate an email to test takers with a form.  If a parent has trained but doesn't appear on your list, please let me know.

Training for particular positions (i.e. starter, stroke and turn judge, referee, head timer, head scorer, and head clerk of course) is available prior to the beginning of our season. These "trained" volunteer positions are not difficult and are essential to running the meets. Each team is required to have trained volunteers - please consider helping your team and learning more about the sport of swimming!
